Default Garrett's "Marshtackie"

I am starting a build thread for the diesel YJ that I mentioned earlier. Here is what it looked like the day we got it.(My 14 year old son Garrett is standing next to it.)

The previous owner told that the engine was blown up, but we didn't care because the engine was being replaced. I checked the compression and it was fine. We put a fuel pump in it and it cranked right up. We went ahead and bought a soft top and a few cans of spray paint, put the other wheels and tires that came with it on and had this to play with until we could scrounge together all of the parts.

We found a 4Bt Cummins with a TH475 on Ebay and built a stand so we could crank it and see how it ran. The fuel pump was bad, and the injector pump leaked badly, but it cranked. I took the pump to Accurate Diesel Injection in Orlando and Tim Heaton turned it up and added a few modifications, along with high performance injectors and a bigger turbo. It should be around 250hp and pushing 600 ft/lbs of torque. Will wait for the dyno to see if this is the case.

We found a matching pair of Dana 60's with 410 gears and they are at the sandblasters getting ready for paint. We sold the 4 cylinder out of the jeep and will have it out tommorow. Then comes the spring over and the axle install.
My son is so excited about this jeep that he can't sleep. I'm nearly the same way. The last thing I built was a 69' Chevy pickup with a 396 when I was in high school. Hopefully when we are done, Garrett will appreciate this jeep and will have learned how to work on it and take care of it. I intend for it to be his when he is sixteen.
Here is what we are planning to have when complete.(Subject to change without notice)

Cummins 4bt
TH475 Transmission
np205 Transfer Case
Dana 60 front and rear
6" to 8" of lift
Stereo that is louder than engine
A/C
Complete diesel gauge package that appears stock

Any and all comments and help appreciated.
More to follow.
Thanks,
Rusty

Rusty, looks great. Mount your p/s pump under the injection pump and she'll be clean. Make sure you got plenty of radiator. What a great project.

Gary(or anyone else for that matter),
Since you have been called the "Diesel Guru", I have a couple questions.
I have been told that engine vibration on the 4BT is going to be a big problem for me. It doesn't seem bad when running on my stand. Should I try to dampen the vibration with a Harmonic Balance pulley from an early 5.9 cummins? What about hydraulic motor mounts?
Can you think of any other challanges for me to head off before I start my install?

Today we finally go around to taking the body off and all the little extras so we can begine the axle swap. Here are a few pictures of the progress.

After the engine and transmission has been removed.

Garrett and my son in law Brian undoing the final items.

Lifting the body off.

Now we can pick the Dana 60's and go to work.

Can anyone give me opinions or reasons why I should or should not reverse the spring hangars on the front when I do my spring over. I have been told both to do them and not to.

no cause upon compression they move forward away from the firewall. yes cause on road at speed, its easier to move back so nicer ride, but does add a little strange steering.

I would try to use the same rubber isolators that were originally used on the engine. It's gonna have more vibration than a gas engine. Most of the vibration will be at idle only. I would also use the same damper that came on the engine. As far as the shackle reverse--do it. It will be cheaper than replacing leaf springs every other time you crawl it.

Gary,
Thanks for the reply. The 4BT did not come with a damper of any type. It has a solid crankshaft pulley. I am guessing that with the low rpm and the application, Cummins did not think it was neccessary. I have put 3200rpm spring in mine instead of 2400rpm that it came with. Will a damper help at all with the idle vibration, or is it only going to help at higher rpms?

Thanks for help with all the questions. This type of build is new to me (jeep suspension and diesel engine both) and I need all the help I can get.

Give me the engine serial# and I'll research it. I can get on the cummin's quickserve site right here at home. Our company is a cummin's engine dealer.
